Another function of a Google Account is a Google Reader. I have created a powerhouse of wonderful ideas through blogs I can access via my Google Reader.
I receive RSS feeds about some of the blogs which are listed on the SLV Victorian PLN site (e.g., Bright Ideas, Hey Jude and Will Richardson).
My Google Reader allows me to subscribe to receive RSS feeds through other blogs including:
Librarians are go
The Wheeler Centre
Suze the Cyberian
With a large amount of information available via blogs, having RSS feeds through my Google Reader allows me to keep abreast of recent posts on blogs.
Today, I am appreciating the benefits of having a Google account. As well as it being useful to sign up for online services in the future, I have enjoyed using my Gmail account to e-mail friends. According to my IT savy friend, Henry, gmail accounts are superior to Hotmail accounts in relation to being hacked.
Into my Google Account Calender, I have added a date in the next few weeks in which to attend a Positive Psychology session.
In my Google Docs, I have found an old roster from a previous library (workplace). I have also seen a document / flyer to promote ALIA Schools’ upcoming seminar – Reading in a Changing World.
In my Google Plus account, I have seen that it is similar in nature to my Facebook account. I have just realised that my old friend has included some photos from her new workplace. It’s lovely to see her colourful desk :-).
I can see that I can access “Google Play” from my computer in addition to my HTC phone. Great! I look forward to downloading more apps for books and movies onto my computer.
Finally, I’m excited about seeing a YouTube account in my Google Plus account. Saved in my YouTube account are many videos from a recent teacher / IT conference.
I am thrilled at the prospect of using my Google account so lots of fun things in the future :-).
I am also pleasantly surprised at the large number of participants in our PLN. I like how Google Maps has been used to show the geographic location of all PLN participants. I will think about a task I can design for students to use Google Maps in this way.
I’m Just a Teacher and I’ve Just Made an App
Above is a beautiful photo of South America, taken by my friend, Ian. He has been very kind, allowing me to stay with him in Brisbane and use his computer for my PLN work. Thank you, Ian 🙂
I enjoyed saving a few websites to My Library. It was great to recommend a website on my Facebook page. I was also able to tweet about the website. I like the potential to widely broadcast websites I value.
I will make some time to go back and read more about using Diigo for work and personal learning experiences.
Ways to use Diigo in Work
There seem to be many benefits of using Diigo. Appealing features include the annotation ones. For instance, I could read an article and highlight parts, clip some areas of the article and add sticky notes here and there. This will be helpful for my own learning purposes and in class during research time with students.
Other Similar Services you Might Have Used in the Past
Delicious. However, it seems I can do more with Diigo.
